Washington. October 6. INTERFAX - As of September 2020, the United States had 3,750 nuclear warheads, the United States State Department said.
"The United States is publishing recently declassified information on US nuclear weapons stockpiles to update data previously published in September 2017. Increasing the transparency of the state's nuclear arsenals is important for non-proliferation and disarmament efforts, including obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and efforts to address issues related to all types of nuclear weapons, including deployed and non-deployed, as well as strategic and non-strategic," the State Department said in a statement.
The US nuclear weapons stocks have decreased by about 88% since 1967 from a maximum of 31255 warheads and by about 83% (from the level of 22217 warheads) in 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell, the State Department notes.
From 1994 to 2020, the United States eliminated 11,683 nuclear warheads, including 711 warheads since 2017. At the same time, about 2 thousand more warheads have been written off and are awaiting liquidation.
The number of non-strategic (tactical) nuclear warheads has decreased by more than 90 since September 30, 1991%
