The U.S. Space Force has established an intelligence analysis team at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. This was reported on October 4 by the SpaceNews portal with reference to the documents.
The structure, called Space Force Intelligence Activity (SFIA), will become an intermediate step for the creation of a full-fledged Space Intelligence Center.
The memorandum was signed on September 24 by Major General Leah Lauderback and Lieutenant General Mary O'Brien. Lauderback is the head of the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Service of the Space Forces. O'Brien is the Deputy Chief of Staff of the US Air Force for Intelligence, Surveillance and Cyber Effects Operations.
The organization will be staffed by teams of space and counter-space analysts who are located at the National Center for Aerospace Intelligence (NASIC) and will move to the National Center for Space Intelligence.
NASIC is the Pentagon's primary source of information on threats affecting air and space operations.
The space and countercosmic analysis teams include both military and civilian personnel.
In December 2019, Donald Trump, then President of the United States, having signed the military budget for 2020, officially announced the creation of Space Forces in the country. The purpose of the new type of troops was to "protect the interests of US national security in space." The creation of the troops cost $738 billion.
