In the late 90s, Ukrainian defense workers tried to gain a foothold in Iran. Several tank modernization options have been developed specifically for this country. However, after a shout from the United States, all military contacts were canceled.
The most promising project could be the modernization of a significant number of captured Iraqi T-72 tanks. From the previous car, only the body and chassis remained, on which the tower from the more modern T-80UD was installed. As a result, security and firepower have significantly increased.
Also, the engine and transmission compartment was significantly modified, where a two-stroke 1000-horsepower 6TD engine, new on-board gearboxes, etc. were implanted. This led to an increase in the maximum and average speed of traffic on highways and rough terrain.

New engines were also received by the existing T-62 and T-55, which, basically, were also recaptured from Iraq.
Tanks modified in this way were involved in tests, they were shown at parades.
It is said that the Iranians were happy with this technique. But the United States, in an ultimatum, demanded to curtail all cooperation, which was done in record time.
