Lockheed Martin has presented the project of the LMXT air tanker, which will compete with the existing Boeing KC-46 aircraft in the competition of the US Air Force (Air Force), involving the creation of the KC-Y tanker, Defense News writes .
The LMXT is based on the European Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transporter (MRTT), modified for the interests of the US Air Force. In particular, the multi-purpose tanker transport aircraft received an update of communication systems and an increased flight range. According to the application Lockheed Martin, LMXT "built in America by Americans for Americans".
In September, a demonstration sample of the MQ-25 Stingray unmanned tanker of the US Navy (Navy) performed aerial refueling of the fifth-generation F-35C Lightning II carrier-based fighter.
Deliveries of KC-Y are expected to begin in 2029. The US Air Force plans to purchase from 140 to 160 KC-Y units, which should replace the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker.
