Europe has announced a reduction in dependence on microelectronics suppliers from the United States and Southeast Asia, Reuters reported on Wednesday-the European Commission intends to create its own ecosystem of chip production.
Currently, manufacturers of cars, consumer electronics and a number of other goods are suffering from the global shortage of microchips, most of which are exported.
To implement the plans, it is also proposed to create a special European semiconductor Fund (European Semiconductor Fund).
At the same time, the agency notes that ensuring the EU's access to rare earth metals outside Europe and the reluctance of investors to invest in production without guarantees that it will be used at full capacity may become serious problems when creating a new ecosystem.
Earlier, the European Union announced plans to produce a fifth of the total volume of high-tech semiconductors in the world by the end of this decade, as well as to develop the first quantum computer within five years. The plan should also reduce the dependence of European countries on Chinese and American suppliers.
The EU has its own factories for the production of chips and a developed microelectronic industry – in particular, in France (the Grenoble cluster).
