3D printers have become a construction tool of the American army. Yesterday, September 11, Popular Mechanics magazine reported that ICON has built the largest "printed" structure in North America — it became the National Guard barracks at the Camp Swift training Center in Bastrop, Texas.
The area of the double barracks is about 350 sq. m. It is designed to accommodate 72 people and is equipped with everything you need. The ICON company expects that the structure will "last for decades".
The process of "printing" army barracks
The 3D-printed barracks were designed by Logan Architecture and Fort Structures. They are the latest project using the latest generation Vulcan construction system from ICON. A special concrete mixture was used to create hollow walls. Later, the voids were filled with insulation, and windows and doors were installed in the openings. The roof is a modular structure used in the construction of storage facilities.
