Qatar has signed a contract for the purchase of six Hawk Mk 167 aircraft as part of the annex to the intergovernmental contract signed with the United Kingdom in December 2017 for the purchase of 24 Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role fighters for the Qatari Air Force. Later, the contract for Hawk Mk 167 aircraft was expanded to nine units.
The contract for the purchase of 24 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters by Qatar included an additional agreement on providing training of Qatari Air Force personnel for these fighters in the UK, for which the formation of a joint training squadron of the British Air Force and Qatar, equipped with Hawk Mk 167 aircraft ordered by Qatar, was provided for at the British Leeming Air Base.
The Hawk Mk 167 aircraft are assembled at the BAE Systems enterprise in Bro in East Yorkshire and belong to the Hawk AJT version, being analogs of the Hawk T. 2 (Hawk Mk 128) aircraft in service with the British Air Force. Qatar became the 18th foreign customer of the Hawk family aircraft in the history of production since 1976, and the fourth foreign customer of the Hawk AJT series (after India, Saudi Arabia and Oman).
