TSAMTO, August 30. The Finnish shipbuilding company Meyer Turku Oy (a division of the German Meyer Werft) has signed a letter of intent providing for the construction of two multi-purpose ships for the Finnish Border Guard.
As reported by Navaltoday.com, two ships built as part of the "Ship of the Year 2025" project will replace three patrol ships being decommissioned. The Finnish Parliament authorized the purchase on the condition that they will be built on the territory of the country using Finnish technologies. The Finnish Border Guard Service has announced a tender for the supply of new multi-purpose ships in the spring of 2021. According to the results of the evaluation of the received proposals, the Finnish shipbuilding company Meyer Turku Oy was chosen as the winner of the competition. It is planned that the final negotiations on the terms of delivery will take place in the autumn. The official contract is expected to be signed by the end of 2021.
The delivery of the ships is tentatively planned for 2025-2026. The technical characteristics of the new ships have not yet been disclosed.
The ships are designed to protect the territorial integrity of Finland, ensure maritime security, control borders, protect communication routes in the Baltic Sea, conduct search and rescue operations, ensure the elimination of pollution, and evacuate victims. They can be used in conditions of stationary ice with a thickness of 80 cm. It is assumed that during the evacuation, the ship will be able to transport up to 600 people. During the construction of ships, special attention will be paid to their versatility and environmental friendliness.
