The Magadan submarine is the third submarine of the 636.3 project, which is being built for the Russian Pacific Fleet. It was planned to launch it in 2020, but due to the pandemic, the timing was somewhat shifted, and it was "baptized" in March of this year.
Admiralty Shipyards has already built six Varshavyanka ships for the Black Sea Fleet, contracts for which were signed in 2010-2011. The second batch of diesel-electric submarines is intended for the Pacific Fleet and is being built taking into account the new duty station.
The project 636.3 Varshavyanka submarines belong to the third generation, are a development of the submarines of projects 636 and 877 and are considered one of the lowest noise in the world. The speed of the underwater course is 20 knots, the maximum diving depth is 300 m, the underwater displacement is over 3000 tons.
