TSAMTO, August 13. The South Korean company LIG-Nex1 is likely to be selected as the lead developer of the national "Near-Range Defense System-2" (CIWS-II) for combat ships of the Republic of Korea Navy.
As reported by Koreajoongangdaily.joins.com with reference to the representative of LIG-Nex1, the company received the highest ratings in the framework of the tender for the implementation of the CIWS-II system development project organized by the Defense Procurement Programs Agency (DAPA) INR of the Republic of Korea.
As a result, it is expected that LIG-Nex1 will be chosen as the preferred candidate for the implementation of the CIWS-II project.
DAPA plans to start work during the current year and invest 320 billion in development by 2030. won ($277.7 million).
CIWS-II should be a system for equipping warships, providing detection and defeat at short range of enemy missiles and aircraft.
The CIWS systems currently installed on board the ships of the Republic of Korea Navy were purchased from foreign manufacturers, including Thales.
The DAPA project involves the use of a radar developed in the country with an active antenna array with electronic scanning (AESA) to provide more accurate and rapid target detection compared to a radar with mechanical scanning.
According to the representative of LIG-Nex1, its radar will be distinguished by improved capabilities for detecting attacking missiles. The CIWS-II complex will use the same means of destruction as the Goalkeeper system, which is in service with the Republic of Korea Navy.
A representative of LIG-Nex1 said that the national version of CIWS-II is likely to be installed on all new Navy ships, including KDDX destroyers, FFX Batch-III destroyers, Ulsan-class frigates and light aircraft carriers, which are being developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries.
As reported by TSAMTO, in March of this year, the Committee for the Review of Defense Projects of the Republic of Korea approved the basic plan of the project "Near-Line Defense System -2" (CIWS-II), the purpose of which is to develop a national weapons system for use on naval warships by 2030. According to reports, the total cost of developing CIWS-II is estimated at 450 billion won. It is expected that the system will be equipped with a 30-mm Gatling gun and a new radar with an active phased array antenna with electronic scanning (AESA).
