TSAMTO, August 12. The nuclear icebreaker "Arctic" left the berth of the Baltic plant and began the transition to the Kronstadt Marine Plant (part of the USC). There, the ship will dock, where scheduled work will be carried out to replace one of the engines.
The universal nuclear icebreaker "Arktika" is the lead vessel of the project 22220, built at the Baltic Plant. The ceremony of its laying took place in November 2013. On June 16, 2016, the order was launched. On October 21, 2020, the main nuclear-powered universal icebreaker "Arctic" was put into operation.
The universal nuclear icebreakers of the 22220 project are the largest and most powerful icebreaking vessels in the world. Their main task is to ensure year-round navigation in the western Arctic region. The vessel is able to overcome ice barriers up to three meters thick. Currently, four more vessels of the project 22220 line are being built at the production facilities of the Baltic Plant, these are the icebreakers Siberia, Ural, Yakutia and Chukotka. The vessels of this project should become the basis of the civil icebreaking fleet of Russia in the coming years.
