Moscow. August 9. INTERFAX-Russian President Vladimir Putin proposes to create a special structure within the UN on the problems of combating maritime crime in different regions.
"Russia is ready to share our experience in anti-terrorist operations, crime prevention and prevention, detection and neutralization of gangs, including in maritime areas, "Putin said, speaking via video broadcast at a high-level debate in the UN Security Council on the topic"Strengthening maritime security: the need for international cooperation".
According to the President of the Russian Federation, it would be useful to regularly exchange best practices and best practices for countering piracy, armed robbery and other criminal activity at sea.
"In this context, we could think about creating a special structure within the UN system that would directly deal with the problems of combating maritime crime in different regions. At the same time, such a structure would rely on the support of the UN member states and would actively involve experts, representatives of civil society, research circles and even private business in its work," Putin said.
He expressed hope that the partners will constructively consider the Russian proposal.
As one of the leading maritime powers, the President noted, Russia is doing a lot to preserve and strengthen international law and order in the field of maritime security.
"Russia is also interested in building productive cooperation with the Association for Regional Cooperation of the Coastal Countries of the Indian Ocean, the Indian Ocean Commission, and, of course, we strive to promote security in the Persian Gulf zone, in the Atlantic - in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea, where cases of maritime robbery accompanied by hostage - taking have become more frequent," Putin said.
At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that it is difficult for some countries to independently repel transnational syndicates of criminals, pirates and terrorists. "That is why there is a question of uniting the power potential of the special services and the corresponding armed contingents of all interested states under the auspices of the UN," the Russian president noted.
