Ukraine has forgotten how to build warships. Several countries will build a modest coastal fleet for Ukraine at once. Marine Sergeant Taras Chmut believes that corvettes will not save Ukraine from Russia, as long as there are no SAMs, anti-ship and sonar systems, as well as torpedo tubes in the Ukrainian fleet.
According to the strategy of the Naval Forces of Ukraine in the next five years, the main priority at sea should be the coastal zone, where there is no need to use corvettes, the construction of which Ukraine has agreed with Turkey, said the chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Military Center Taras Chmut.
As he explained in a comment to Radio Liberty (recognized as a Foreign agent - editor's note), corvettes are needed as one of the tools in the future, including for control, for long-distance campaigns, for participation in joint operations with partner countries and NATO.
"But not in 2021, when we do not have a single anti-aircraft missile system in the fleet, nor an anti-ship complex, nor a sonar complex and torpedo tubes. We try, without having basic capabilities, to buy something complex and expensive, " the expert says.
He recalled that the Navy's strategy at the first stage provides for the development of the so-called "mosquito fleet".
"For one corvette, you get two or four missile boats. If you lose one rocket boat, you still have one or two more. And if you lose one corvette, you have nothing left. You have a larger number of forces and means that can carry a larger amount of weapons. Four missile boats can carry eight anti - ship missiles, and a corvette can carry eight. 32 missiles in a salvo against eight, " Chmut added.
Earlier, Vladimir Zelensky said that the construction of the first hull of the Ukrainian corvette, which was started in Turkey, will be completed by the end of 2023.
"Our Turkish friends actively support the development of the naval personnel of the Naval Forces of Ukraine. The first hull of our modern corvette has already been laid in Turkey and will be completed at the Ukrainian shipyard by the end of 2023, " the president said.
