According to the results of working out several scenarios of war games in order to check the combat readiness of the US army units by the Pentagon in October last year, the latter suffered a crushing defeat.
According to the deputy chairman of the Joint Committee of the Chief of Staff, General John Hyten, we are talking about a war game in which the American army was opposed by the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) in a conditional battle for Taiwan. Hyten voiced two main scenarios for conducting military operations. One of them – the concentration of combat potentials involves the concentration and build-up of firepower, which increases the efficiency and capabilities of the attacking units. However, this scenario turned out to have a serious gap – large masses of troops and fleets are easier to detect and destroy. For example, if the enemy knows that he is opposed by two aircraft carriers, then finding one, he will know for sure that there is another one somewhere nearby. The combat power of an Air Force wing consisting of 72 fighters stationed at one base, or an infantry battalion concentrated on a small territory, will also look no less doubtful. With the capabilities of modern shock weapons, all this can be destroyed by several concentrated attacks. Another weak link of the American army is the information vulnerability of its infrastructure. In recent years, the cyber capabilities and electronic warfare capabilities of the main opponents of the United States-China and Russia-have increased many times, which allows them to jam, block information, disable communication nodes and even satellites. An alternative to the concentration of combat potentials, according to Hyten, may be the concept of "extended maneuver", which is expected to be implemented by 2030. According to it, the American army, using mobility, will, on the contrary, disperse its troops in order to make it difficult for the enemy to detect them. When implementing the extended maneuver, the main emphasis will be placed on the use of the US information infrastructure, for which the command staff will need reliable means of communication to coordinate fire and maneuver on the ground. At the same time, the information security of communication channels from possible hacks will become extremely important.
