TSAMTO, August 4. On August 2, the Egyptian Defense Ministry announced the arrival at the naval base in Alexandria of the fourth and last of the four Type-209/1400mod class NPLs built in Germany.
The submarine " S44 " arrived in Alexandria, having made the transition from the port of Kiel in Germany under the control of an Egyptian crew and joined the three previously delivered Type-209/1400mod class submarines of the Egyptian Navy.
As reported by TSAMTO, the basic agreement for the construction of Type-209/1400mod submarines for the Egyptian Navy was signed with TKMS on December 12, 2011. The cost of the sale was not officially disclosed, however, according to media reports, the contract for the supply of two NAPL with an option for the construction of two more is estimated at 920 million euros ($1.006 billion). The option to build a second pair of submarines was implemented in 2015.
It is assumed that the delivery of new submarines will contribute to improving Egypt's defense capability, ensuring security in the Suez Canal area, the Red and Mediterranean Seas and will support the protection of the country's economic interests.
The ceremony of handing over to the customer the head NPL of the series, which received the designation "S41", took place at the enterprise in Kiel on December 12, 2016. To the Ras El-Tin Naval Base (Alexandria) she arrived on April 19, 2017. The second influx arrived in Egypt in October 2017, the third-in May 2020.
The naming and launching ceremony of " S44 " took place on September 29, 2020, and on July 9, 2021, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) at the enterprise in Kiel handed over the last NAPL to the command of the Egyptian Navy.
The length of the Type-1400/209mod submarine of the Egyptian Navy is 62 m, the width is 6.2 m, the surface / underwater displacement is about 1450/1594 tons, the maximum speed in the underwater position is 21.5 knots, the cruising range is 11 thousand nautical miles, the crew is 30 people. The NAPL can dive to a maximum depth of up to 250 m. The submarine's armament includes the UGM-84 Harpoon missile launcher, sea mines and eight torpedo tubes with DM2A4 torpedoes (a total of 14 units).
