BRUSSELS, Aug 3-RIA Novosti. NATO condemned the attack on the tanker MV Mercer Street, "is concerned about Iran's destabilizing actions in the region," the alliance said in a statement.
"We join the Allies in strongly condemning the recent attack on the MV Mercer Street tanker off the coast of Oman... Freedom of navigation is vital for all allies. The United Kingdom, Romania and the United States have concluded that Iran is most likely responsible for this incident. The Allies are concerned about Iran's destabilizing actions in the region and call on Tehran to comply with its international obligations," the document says.
Last Thursday, the Mercer Street tanker sailing under the Liberian flag was attacked in the Arabian Sea. The company-operator of the Zodiac Maritime vessel is owned by Israeli entrepreneur Eyal Ofer. As a result of the incident, two crew members were killed - a Romanian citizen and a British citizen, presumably responsible for protecting the ship. The US has blamed Iran for the attack on a ship in the Arabian Sea using a drone.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry later called the statements of the United States and Britain about Tehran's involvement in the attacks on an Israeli tanker contradictory and groundless.
