The US military hit one of two targets while testing the Aegis missile defense System (Aegis), the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) at the Pentagon reported on July 24.
The exercises took place on July 24 in the Pacific Ocean to the northwest of the Hawaiian Islands.
"Saturday's tests, dubbed Aegis Weapon System 33, were aimed at intercepting two short — range ballistic missile targets with two other missiles launched from a US Navy warship," Reuters quoted the statement as saying.
It is noted that the agency could not confirm the destruction of the second target.
According to the US military, these were the most complex exercises of this kind using two targets and a ship with the Aegis missile defense system.
On May 29, the US Missile Defense Agency reported that the sea-based missile defense system missed during tests. A check was initiated on this fact.
In December last year, military expert Igor Korotchenko spoke about the lag of the American missile defense system from the Russian one. According to him, Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles are capable of overcoming the American missile defense system due to their new combat equipment.
He also noted that the United States will not be able to develop effective means of anti-missile interception for the next 15-20 years.
