On the eve of the celebration of the Russian Navy Day, the world's northernmost indoor swimming pool was opened at the Arctic Shamrock military base of the Northern Fleet, located on the island of Alexandra Land in the Franz Josef Land archipelago.

According to the Department of Information and Mass Communications of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, this complex hydraulic structure for the military in the Arctic was built in the shortest possible time by order of the head of the department Sergei Shoigu.

The unique pool with a length of 25 meters and a depth of 1.8 meters has three sports tracks. 24 people can swim there at the same time. The facility is equipped with a modern system of round-the-clock cleaning, heating and maintaining the water temperature at 24 degrees Celsius. Water for filling the pool bowl is supplied from snow melting plants. Heating, recirculation, filtration and disinfection of water is carried out using the most modern technological equipment and meets all established sanitary and hygienic requirements. The pool building has panoramic windows, shower rooms, dressing rooms, changing rooms, auxiliary rooms.

"The indoor swimming pool built using advanced construction technologies will allow servicemen undergoing military service in the harsh conditions of the Arctic to swim all year round, which will positively affect the maintenance of good physical shape, will help to relieve emotional tension and stress, normalize sleep, strengthen immunity and the general resistance of the body to external stimuli," the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation noted.

"Arctic Shamrock" is the second closed-cycle residential complex built for the Northern Fleet in the high-latitude regions of the Arctic. Today it is the only capital construction object in the world, built at the 80th degree of north latitude. The first "Northern Clover" was built at the 75th degree of north latitude on the Kotelny Island of the Novosibirsk Islands archipelago.

The area of the "Arctic Shamrock" is more than 14 thousand square meters.  The autonomy of the complex provides comfortable accommodation and performance of official duties for up to 150 military personnel for a year and a half. The construction of the complex was carried out using innovative and energy-efficient technologies that minimize energy consumption. The object is as environmentally friendly as possible and does not cause any damage to the environment.
