The task of the test firing of the S-500 Prometheus missile defense system was to check the launch complex and the rocket. The radar part of the system was tested and adopted by the state commission last year, military expert Sergey Khatylev, who led the anti-aircraft missile forces of the Moscow Air defense from 2007-2009, told MK.
- We can assume that the tests have been completed. In the very near future - I think, in two or three months-documents will be prepared and the S-500 will be put into service. Well, then it will go according to the plan: the troops will receive equipment, conduct initial firing at the Kapustin Yar training ground, then they will be put on experimental combat or immediately on combat duty. Most likely, everything will be completed by the end of the year, " Khatylev suggested.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that a high-speed ballistic target was successfully shot down during test firing. This is the main task of the S-500 - interception of short-and medium-range ballistic missiles, as well as intercontinental-class missiles. In the Russian missile defense system, Prometheus will occupy a niche between the A-135 Amur strategic defense complex of Moscow and the S-400 Triumph military anti-aircraft systems.
The first set of S-500 will be delivered to the Air Defense-missile defense association in the Moscow region.
