Hong Kong. July 13. INTERFAX-Japan is concerned that its neighboring states are increasing weapons and activating the activities of their armed forces, according to the White Paper published by the Japanese Defense Ministry, an annual report on the country's security and the situation in the world as a whole.
In particular, Russia is mentioned in this aspect, which "is modernizing its weapons, including nuclear ones," is developing hypersonic and other types of modern weapons, and is stepping up actions in space.
As an example of threats to Japan's security, the report notes the activities of Russian submarines and missile launches from a Borei-class nuclear submarine during strategic exercises in the Sea of Okhotsk in 2020.
It also says that "Chinese military threats, combined with the lack of transparency of its defense policy, have become a matter of serious concern for the region, including Japan and the international community."
"China maintains a high level of growth of its defense budget without sufficient transparency, while widely and rapidly strengthening its military power in qualitative and quantitative terms, with an emphasis on nuclear, missile, naval and air forces," the White Paper says.
It touches on the topic of Taiwan, which is directly linked to the security of Japan.
"The stabilization of the situation around Taiwan is important for Japan's security and the stability of the international community," the Japanese defense ministry believes.
It writes that China continues to intensify military activities around Taiwan, while the United States "has demonstrated a clear position of support for Taiwan in military aspects" by selling weapons and transit of American ships through the Taiwan Strait.
"Although Washington has clearly indicated its position on supporting Taiwan militarily, it is unlikely that Beijing will make any compromises in its position, given that Taiwan belongs to the sphere of its fundamental interests," the report says.
