Until recently, the most powerful towed guns in the world continued to be used against terrorist groups in Syria. We are talking about the 180-mm S-23, supplied to the army of Damascus by the Soviet Union in the 70 years.
These guns, developed back in the late 40s, had unique characteristics - a high-explosive shell weighing 88 kg could hit targets at distances of more than 30,000 m. Active-jet ammunition hit even further - almost 44,000 m.
The disadvantage of the "twenty-third" was considered to be their significant weight-more than 21 tons-and a small rate of fire - 0.5-1 shot per minute. The calculation was numerous-16 people.
If earlier these guns appeared from time to time in reports from this "hot spot", now this has not happened for about four years. According to military experts, it is unlikely that all of them were lost in the battles. Most likely, the problem is that rare and expensive ammunition has simply run out. Our production has been discontinued for a long time and no one else in the world produces them.
