Recall that an intergovernmental agreement with Germany on the construction of two submarines of the 209/1400Mod project for Egypt (with an option for two more) in the amount of 920 million euros was signed in 2011, while the construction of these two boats was carried out at the HDW shipyard in Kiel (since the end of 2012, the TKMS shipyard) mainly due to loan guarantees issued by the German government in the amount of 700 million euros. The lead Egyptian boat S 41 (tail number "861"), built in Kiel, was launched on December 10, 2015, transferred to Egypt in December 2016 and arrived in Alexandria on April 19, 2017. The second boat S 42 (tail number "862") was launched in Kiel on December 5, 2016. The Egyptian Navy received it on August 8, 2017, the boat arrived in Egypt on October 18, 2017.
The practical implementation of the agreement was somewhat delayed due to the political events of recent years in Egypt, nevertheless, in 2015 an intergovernmental agreement was signed on the construction of two more optional submarines of the same type for Egypt (that is, the third and fourth), with delivery by 2021. The first of these boats, S 43 (tail number "867"), was launched in Kiel on May 3, 2019, transferred to Egypt in Kiel on April 9, 2020 and arrived in Alexandria on its own on May 5, 2020. The second optional (and the fourth for Egypt as a whole) submarine S 44 was launched on September 29, 2020.
