The US Department of Defense has rejected a contract for the provision of JEDI cloud computing services worth about $10 billion, which was claimed by the largest American corporations Microsoft and Amazon. This is stated in a statement published on Tuesday, July 6, on the department's website .
"Today, the Ministry of Defense canceled the JEDI competition and initiated the contract termination procedure <...> Due to the changing requirements for expanding cloud computing capabilities and industry achievements, the JEDI Cloud contract no longer meets the needs of the ministry," the report says.
John Sherman, acting director of Information Technology at the Pentagon, stressed that JEDI was proposed at a time when the needs were different, and the privacy policy technology and the cloud-based information exchange system were less mature.
The Ministry also informed about the intention to conclude a new contract for the provision of services in the field of cloud computing, which will be called JWCC (Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability).
The Pentagon stressed that they will expect offers from Amazon and Microsoft, since these are the only companies working in the field of cloud infrastructure services that meet the requirements of the defense department. However, the Pentagon may consider proposals from other companies if they demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the ministry.
In 2018, it was reported that the armed forces of the Russian Federation will receive a " self-protected iCloud " - a closed "cloud" storage for official and secret information. The Ministry of Defense has begun to create a network of geographically distributed disaster-resistant data processing centers (TrCCOD). This system will be connected to the "military Internet", which is not connected to the usual one. A segment of the future complex is already functioning in the Southern Military District.
According to Izvestia, the first specialized software and technical center has already been created in the Southern Military District. The system has been tested, and the experience of its application is recognized as successful. In the future, such digital information repositories will appear in every military district.
