The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation regards the dangerous actions of the destroyer URO "Defender" of Great Britain in the Black Sea as a gross violation of the UN Convention. The agency called on the British side to conduct a thorough investigation of the actions of the ship's crew.
"The dangerous actions of the British Navy destroyer are regarded by the Russian Ministry of Defense as a gross violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982. The Russian military department called on the British side to conduct a thorough investigation of the actions of the crew of the destroyer Defender to prevent similar incidents in the future, " the military department said in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 23.
Earlier on Wednesday, it was reported that the Black Sea Fleet of the Navy, together with the Border Service of the FSB of Russia, stopped the violation of the state border by the destroyer URO "Defender" of the British Navy.
It was noted that the destroyer was previously warned about the use of weapons in case of violation of the state border of the country, but there was no reaction from the ship's crew. In this connection, a warning shooting was carried out.
The British Ministry of Defense, commenting on the incident with the violation of the borders of the Russian Federation by a British ship, said that the destroyer made a peaceful passage through the territorial waters of Ukraine in accordance with international law.
The press service also noted that Russia conducted "training shooting" in the Black Sea. The ministry did not agree with the statement that bombs were dropped on the path of the destroyer, and also that warning shots were fired from Russia.
After the incident, the defense attache at the British Embassy in Moscow was summoned to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
As noted in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the representative of the British Armed Forces explained the position of the Russian department in connection with the violation of Russian borders by a British ship.
"The British side is indicated that the British destroyer Defender operating in the northwestern part of the Black Sea today violated the state border of the Russian Federation and entered the territorial sea near Cape Fiolent, going three kilometers deep, "the report said.
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the crew of the Defender was previously warned about the possible use of weapons in the event of continued illegal presence in the territorial waters of the country.
"The crew of the British destroyer did not respond to obvious warning signals in accordance with maritime law, and therefore the Russian patrol ship was forced to perform a warning fire. For the purpose of additional warning, the Russian Su-24M aircraft performed a warning bombing at the course of the British destroyer, " the military department said.
The first vice-speaker of the State Council of the Crimea, Yefim Fix, called the incident with the violation of the Russian border by a British destroyer an attempt to check Moscow "on the tooth".
