YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, June 23 - RIA Novosti. In the waters of the Sea of Japan, on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, large-scale military exercises with the participation of 10 thousand military personnel started on Wednesday, the press service of the Eastern Military District reports.
"On the islands of Sakhalin, Iturup and Kunashir, as well as in the waters of the Sea of Japan, a bilateral exercise has started with formations and military units of the army Corps of the Eastern Military District, the forces of the Pacific Fleet. The event is held under the personal leadership of the acting commander of the Air Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Sergei Sevryukov, " the message reads.
According to the press service, the exercises are one of the stages of checking the operational and combat training of troops in the summer training period. During the event, the trained leadership will work out the use of an interspecific grouping of troops to ensure the military security of Russia on the eastern borders.
"The initial situation in the Far East is modeled, which is based on the confrontation between two coalitions of conditional states. During the practical actions of the troops, it is planned to land naval and tactical landings," the report says.
In total, more than 10 thousand military personnel, up to 500 units of military equipment, about 32 aircraft, about 12 ships and vessels of the Pacific Fleet for various purposes take part in the exercises. The maneuvers in the island zone of the VVO will take place in two stages within five days.
