In Volgograd, a unique transition of pontoon units of the engineering troops, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, was completed. According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the head of the engineering troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Yuri Stavitsky, as well as the city's leadership and public organizations took part in the solemn event in Volgograd.
The military department said that the calculations of four engineering brigades participated in the transition. These are the pontoon-bridge brigade of the central subordination, as well as the engineering and sapper brigades of the Western, Central and Southern military Districts. The Defense Ministry noted that the total length of the route for a month of passing the route from three different regions of Russia totaled more than 5,000 km.
"For the first time in the world practice, military personnel of engineering units used ferries designed for the equipment of crossings over water barriers as a means of transportation on inland waterways," the Ministry of Defense stressed. This unique transition confirmed the correctness of the specified characteristics of the newest pontoon parks in service. Also, during the training, the capabilities of the links and tow-motor boats were confirmed when moving over long distances while moving on water, including in conditions of extreme wind waves.
