TSAMTO, June 21. According to the Ministry of Defense of India, the company Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) on June 18 held a ceremony of laying the keel of the second project 11356 frigate under construction in this country, intended for the Indian Navy.
The event was attended by the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral G. Ashok Kumar.
The construction of the ships is carried out within the framework of the bilateral intergovernmental agreement signed by Russia and India in October 2016. The Ministry of Defense of India signed a contract with Rosoboronexport JSC worth $ 950 million for the direct delivery of the first pair of low-profile URO frigates of Project 11356 for the Indian Navy in October 2018. These ships must be built by JSC "Baltic Shipbuilding Plant "Yantar" within four years from the date of conclusion of the contract.
In November 2018, GSL signed a contract with Rosoboronexport JSC worth about $ 500 million for the transfer of the project, the supply of materials and components, as well as assistance in the construction of two additional ships in India. The Indian Defense Ministry signed a contract with Goa Shipyard Ltd for the construction of these frigates on January 25, 2019.
Currently, the construction of the first pair of frigates, "Tushil" and "Tamala", continues at the enterprise "Baltic Shipbuilding Plant" Yantar " in Kaliningrad. As planned, they will be delivered to the customer by the end of the first half of 2024.
The Russian side has transferred to GSL all the necessary technologies for the construction of ships and provides technical assistance. The cutting of steel for the construction of the first frigate in India began at Goa Shipyard Ltd in September 2020. The keel laying of this ship took place on January 29, 2021. As planned, the first frigate Goa Shipyard Ltd will deliver to the Indian Navy in 2026, the second-with an interval of 6 months.
Project 11356 frigates are designed for anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare, providing air defense both independently and as part of ship formations.
The length of the project 11356 ship is 124.8 m, width-15.2 m, draft-4.2 m, standard displacement-3620 tons, crew-193 people. The cruising range at 14 knots is 4,850 miles. The ships are equipped with gas turbine units produced by the Nikolaev GP NPKG "Zorya-Mashproekt", which the Indian side buys independently. The cost of each of the four sets is estimated at $ 50 million.
The frigates are expected to be equipped with Russian-Indian BrahMos missiles. The armament will also include A 100-mm A190E artillery system, a medium-range "Calm" air defense system, and a torpedo armament. The Ka-27/Ka-28/Ka-31 helicopter can be placed on board the ship. As planned, some of the Russian systems will be replaced by Indian counterparts. The hulls of the ships will also be made of Indian steel.
