The Americans may launch a promising Ground-based Strategic Deterrent intercontinental ballistic missile in 2023. In the arsenal of the Air Force, it will replace the famous Minuteman III.
The United States has long wanted a replacement for its only mine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the Minuteman III. As reported by Air Force Magazine, the Pentagon has decided on the timing of its launch.
Program officials said that the first sample of the rocket will be launched by the end of 2023 from the Vandenberg base. GBSD is expected to reach initial operational readiness in 2029 and full operational readiness in 2036. By that time, the number of new missiles should be 400 units.
The LGM-30G Minuteman III entered service in 1970. The product was repeatedly upgraded: the rocket, in particular, received a new guidance and control system, as well as updated power plants.
