INTERFAX - The activities of the Northern Fleet ensure the military and economic security of the Russian Arctic and are not directed against other states, said the commander of the Northern Fleet, Hero of the Russian Federation Admiral Alexander Moiseev in an interview published on Monday in the official newspaper of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation "Red Star".
"The Ministry of Defense pays primary attention to strengthening the state's defense capability in this (Arctic-IF) region. The air defense system of the Russian segment of the Arctic and the northern borders of our country is being improved. Under reliable protection is the national transport communication of Russia - the Northern Sea Route, " - said Moiseev, answering the question of the publication about what is being done to improve security in the Arctic.
He specified that " the Northern Fleet solves the tasks of ensuring the safety of Russian shipping and maritime economic activities together with the Border Management of the Federal Security Service of Russia."
"In the Arctic zone, a system of interdepartmental regional information and coordination centers has been created and is effectively functioning-to exchange data on the situation and organize interaction in resolving possible crisis situations," the commander of the Northern Fleet explained.
He also noted that " the activities of the Northern Fleet, aimed primarily at maintaining stability in the Euro-Arctic region, are carried out in strict accordance with the norms of international law and are not directed against other countries."
