MOSCOW, May 17-RIA Novosti. Russia can continue the construction of nuclear-powered strategic missile submarines of the project 955 ("Borey") after all ten such submarines contracted for today are ready, Vladimir Pospelov, a member of the board of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation, a member of the Marine Board under the government, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Answering the question whether the series will end after the construction of the ninth and tenth such submarines, he said: "Not a fact. The series can be continued. The project proved to be successful and has good prospects for modernization."
Pospelov did not specify the exact number of additional Boreas ,but noted that the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START-3) clearly defines the number of launchers and warheads. These two parameters, according to him, determine the number of carriers.
The Borey-class strategic missile submarine cruisers (RPKSN) (Project 955) were designed at the Rubin Marine Engineering Design Bureau in St. Petersburg. During the construction of the Boreyev, new achievements were applied in the creation of shipboard radio-electronic means to reduce noise. Their main armament is the new Bulava missile system.
The submarines are equipped with a pop-up rescue chamber designed for the entire crew. The Borey - class submarine is 170 meters long, 13.5 meters wide, 450 meters deep, and has a crew of 107 people. The construction is carried out by Sevmash, the only shipyard in Russia that provides the entire cycle of creating warships with a nuclear power plant.
The characteristics of the submarine of the improved project 955A are not disclosed due to the secrecy regime.
Currently, the Russian Navy has three submarines of project 955 "Yuri Dolgoruky", "Alexander Nevsky" and "Vladimir Monomakh", as well as the main project 955A "Prince Vladimir". In total, ten ships of these projects should be built, and the last two, which were named "Dmitry Donskoy" and "Prince Potemkin", will be laid down in 2021.
