Ukraine has received an order for the first batch of T-64BM2 "Crab". This is reported by the Defense Express portal with reference to the agency "Ukrinform". So far, we are talking about 12 combat vehicles that have undergone a deep modernization.
It is assumed that the "Crab" will be the last version of the tank, which was put on the conveyor more than 55 years ago. Instead of the old 5TDF engine, a more modern 6TD-1 with a capacity of 1000 hp, previously used on the T-80UD, will be installed on it. However, this will require a redesign of the engine and transmission compartment.
It is not known how the chassis will be modified, it was previously criticized by tankers due to lack of reliability.
In accordance with modern requirements, a new fire control system with a thermal imaging sight will be installed. The commander will be able to duplicate the actions of the gunner-operator.
From the 125-mm cannon, it will be possible to launch laser-guided Kombat missiles. It is also planned to update the means of communication and the introduction of navigation systems.
Independent experts are quite skeptical about the plans for mass modernization of the existing Ukrainian fleet of "sixty-fourths". While the development of this project continues, and in the near future, a single prototype will be created, which should pass full-fledged tests. All this will take a few more years.
Given the chronic problems with financing, the lack of technology and trained personnel, there is a high probability that the "Crab" will not be brought to mass production.
