According to experts, it will be able to determine the landing site for astronauts, as well as collect samples of lunar soil.
MOSCOW, April 21. /TASS/. Russian scientists are considering the possibility of delivering a robot MARFA to the moon, which will be able to collect soil samples for research. This was stated by the scientific director of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences Lev Zeleny during the general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"We propose to make such a robotic system and call it MARFA (mobile autonomous robotic functional equipment)," he said.
According to Zeleny, the robot will imitate a human. It can be delivered to the moon together with the lander. He will be able to detach, take soil samples and put them in the machine. "It is not necessary to return [the robot] to Earth. It will show that a person can sit down, " Zelyonyi said.
This will allow the new robotic system to be tested together with the soil sampling mission, he added.
The General Meeting of members of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) is held on April 20-21 in a mixed online and offline format.
