The exercises, which involved more than 20 ships and boats of the Black Sea Fleet and three squadrons of attack aircraft of the Southern Military District's Air Force and Air Defense Association, were held as part of a control check of the fleet's forces during the winter training period. This is stated in a statement issued on Tuesday by the press service of the Black Sea Fleet.
"A detachment of ships consisting of the frigates Admiral Makarov and Admiral Essen, the small missile ships Grayvoron and Vyshny Volochek, as well as missile boats, small anti - submarine ships and large landing ships conducted exercises to repel the air attack of a simulated enemy using active radio-electronic interference and the conditional use of air defense equipment," the fleet's press service said.
"In turn, three squadrons of attack aircraft of the Southern Military District conducted training on entering the combat course, the conditional use of missile weapons on the detachment and leaving the ship's air defense systems from the retaliatory strike," the navy added.
The flights were performed at extremely low altitudes in difficult hydrometeorological conditions. Earlier, more than 50 aircraft of the Southern Military District were relocated to the Republic of Crimea as part of a control check.
