The United States and its NATO allies are actively building up naval and land forces in the Arctic. This was announced at a meeting in Severomorsk on April 13 by Russian Defense Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu. According to him, NATO countries are increasing the intensity of combat training, as well as expanding and modernizing military infrastructure in the Arctic region.
The Russian Defense Ministry, the head of the military department noted, regularly conducts measures to strengthen the state's defense capability and protect its national interests in the Arctic. To do this, the military is " systematically working to improve the combat capabilities of the Northern Fleet." The sailors are supplied with modern military equipment, specially adapted for use in harsh climatic conditions. The region is actively engaged in combat training, and various research activities are carried out there. Considerable attention is also paid to improving the Arctic infrastructure.
The Minister of Defense recalled that last week the complex Arctic expedition "Umka-2021"was completed here. Recall that during this event, a unique ascent from under the ice in a limited area with a radius of 300 meters was made by three nuclear submarines at once. This event made a lot of noise in the foreign media.
"Thanks to the measures taken, the Northern Fleet is able to effectively counter the existing challenges and threats to Russia in the Arctic," Sergei Shoigu said.
At the same time, the situation in this region, according to the head of the Russian Defense Ministry, remains difficult. "Competition for access to the resources of the Arctic Ocean and transport communications between the leading countries of the world is increasing," Sergei Shoigu concluded.
