The service life of nuclear submarines of projects 949A and 971 will be doubled, they will be equipped with new weapons, said the commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy Nikolai Evmenov.
"The repair and modernization of nuclear submarines of the 949A, 971 project will continue. I can say with confidence that these submarines will become owners of new characteristics for weapons and technical equipment, "Evmenov said in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper.
"This will increase the efficiency of these submarines' tasks in the current situation in the world's oceans, " Evmenov said.
"The service life of the Project 949A and 971 submarines will be doubled. Their modernization stock and unique technological solutions used in the repair and modernization will allow us to treat these ships with even greater respect with solid experience and service experience, " he said.
Project 949A "Antey" submarines are a series of Soviet / Russian submarines armed with cruise missiles and designed to destroy aircraft carrier strike formations.
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the nuclear submarines of the Antey project are the basis of a non-strategic strike group of the Russian Navy.
The Project 971 large nuclear submarine is designed to combat submarines, ship groups, and strike enemy ground targets. It is armed with a torpedo-missile system, which consists of eight torpedo tubes and is adapted for firing both torpedoes and cruise missiles. The submarine has a traditional two-hull architectural and structural design type.
