Moscow. March 19. INTERFAX-Two more diesel submarines of the Lada project will be built for the Russian military, the decision on whether to continue the series has not yet been made, said the commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy Nikolai Evmenov.
"In the near term, the Navy will also receive non-nuclear submarines of the Lada type of the project 677 Velikiye Luki and Kronstadt. I note that their tactical and technical characteristics and capabilities have been significantly improved, "he said in an interview with the Russian Defense Ministry's Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper.
"As for the prospects of these submarines, I can say that it is planned to build two more units. Regarding the further continuation of the series, I want to note that this is always justified by the experience of operating a particular project. Based on this experience, we will act," Evmenov said.
Two diesel submarines of the project 677 "Lada"-"Kronshtadt" and "Velikiye Luki" are planned to be delivered on November 25, 2021, according to the Kremlin materials for the trip of Russian President Vladimir Putin to St. Petersburg in November 2019.
The Project 677 Lada submarines were developed at the end of the last century. The lead submarine "Saint Petersburg" was laid down in 1997, transferred to the Navy in 2010. The submarines of this project "Kronstadt" and "Velikiye Luki" were laid down in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
The need for Project 677 submarines remains, Evmenov said earlier.
"Having one series and one project (of non-nuclear submarines-IF) is like having one pair of shoes. They were soaked, and that was all. The need for Project 677 remains, but it will be clarified and formed based on the results of the operation of the first ships of the project," the commander - in-chief said, noting the fleet's interest in building diesel - electric submarines of another project-project 636.3.
Project 677 submarines are designed to combat enemy submarines and surface ships, protect naval bases, the sea coast and sea communications, as well as launch a missile attack on enemy coastal targets.
