Moscow. March 15. INTERFAX-Organizational measures are being taken to establish a Russian Navy base in Sudan, the head of the Duma Defense Committee, Vladimir Shamanov, told Interfax.

"I know that organizational measures are being taken," the parliamentarian told the agency on Monday, when asked about the timing of the start of the operation of the base in Sudan.

Shamanov noted that the package of documents concerning the Russian Navy station in Sudan may be considered by the State Duma in the autumn-after the parliamentary elections, which are expected to be held in September.

"After all, this is an international cooperation, where a number of bylaws should be prepared in order to consider everything in a package. I think it will take some time. But, most likely, this will be the task of the State Duma of the next, eighth convocation, " the source said.

SUDAN NAVY BASE

In Sudan, as reported, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation creates a point of material and technical support (PMTO) Navy on the Red Sea. In December 2020, it became known that Russia and Sudan signed a corresponding agreement.

A commission of the Russian Defense Ministry visited Sudan as part of a bilateral agreement on the establishment of the Russian Navy's PMTO, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov, who oversees property management and the cantonment of troops, told Interfax on February 9.

On February 28, the press service of the Black Sea Fleet reported that for the first time in the recent history of the Russian Federation, a Russian warship - the Admiral Grigorovich frigate equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles-entered the port of Sudan.

The agreement, which was published in December 2020 on the official Internet portal of legal information, noted that the maximum number of Russian military personnel in the naval station in Sudan will not exceed 300 people. The document assumes that a maximum of four Russian ships, including ships with a nuclear power plant, can be located at the Russian Navy station in Sudan at the same time. Russia can use the airspace of Sudan.
