TSAMTO, March 12. The command of the Indian Navy, during a ceremony held on March 10 at the Mumbai Naval Shipyard, adopted the third of the six ordered Kalvari (Scorpion) – class (S23) "Karanj" (Karanj).
The event was attended by the Chief of Staff (Commander) Indian Navy Karambir Singh.
The new submarine will join the previously adopted NAPLS "Kalvari" and "Khanderi" and will enter the combat structure of the Western Command of the Indian Navy.

In October 2005, the Government of India signed a contract with French and Indian companies for the construction of six Scorpin-class submarines under Project 75. The construction of the submarines is carried out in accordance with the technology transfer agreement by Mazagon Dock Limited (now Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited) with the participation of the French Naval Group (formerly DCNS). In February 2010, the project cost was increased to 235.62 billion rubles. RS. ($3.6 billion). The submarine delivery schedule was revised several times. The initial plan called for the delivery of the first NAPL in 2012, the remaining submarines were planned to be delivered at intervals of one year until 2017. At the moment, the deadline for the transfer of the sixth NAPL has been postponed to the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023. The new submarines will replace the outdated Sindukush (Kilo) and Shishumar (Type-209/1500) class submarines.
The construction of the main NAPL series began in December 2006. The Indian Navy transferred the Kalvari NAPL on 21 September and entered the fleet on 14 December 2017 with a delay of almost 6 years. The second NAPL of the series, "Khanderi", was delivered to the Indian Navy in September 2019.
The third submarine in the series, the Karanj, was launched in December 2018 and handed over to the Indian Navy on 15 February 2021.
The fourth and fifth submarines, Vela and Vagir, launched in May 2019 and November 2020, are expected to enter service in 2022.
The remaining NAPL "Vagshir" is under construction and is likely to be launched in 2021.
The length of the Kalvari class (Skorpen) is 67.6 m, width-6.2 m, surface / underwater displacement-1615/1775 tons. The submarine is armed with six 533-mm torpedo tubes and is capable of using torpedoes, mines, and anti-ship missiles SM-39 "Exocet" Block.2, equipped with C303/S torpedo protection systems. Ammunition-18 weapons (torpedoes, missiles, mines). The NAPL is equipped with four MTU 12V 396 SE84 diesel engines, and has a maximum speed of 20 knots underwater and 11 knots above water. The range of navigation in the surface position is 6,500 nautical miles at a speed of 8 knots. Crew – 31-36 people, including 6 officers.
