The Royal Navy of Great Britain will have a permanent presence in the Arctic Circle to counter Russia's strategic advantage in controlling the trade routes that will open up to navigation as the ice sheet melts.
This is reported by the newspaper The Times, citing sources in the government of the country.
As the publication points out, amid fears that as a result of climate change, Russia may establish control over the polar regions, in the coming months, a British frigate will join the NATO task force in the Barents Sea. Next week, The Times writes, " a long-awaited analytical report on defense, security and foreign policy issues will be published."
"The Global Britain in the Age of Competition document will clearly outline the threat that climate change poses to stability around the world," the article says.
One of the authors of this document is General Richard Nudgee, who heads the Department of Defense's Climate Change policy division. He was also instructed to conduct an analysis for an immediate response to the situation in the event of an escalation of the dispute over Arctic waters. The report is called the most radical revision of defense, security and foreign policy issues since the end of the Cold War, Eadaily reports.
