Soviet nuclear submarines of the project 941 type "Shark" (according to the NATO classification - "Typhoon") frighten with their size, writes the American edition of Popular Mechanics on March 3.
It is noted that a total of five such "underwater monsters" were produced in the USSR, but today only the cruiser Dmitry Donskoy remains in service with the Russian fleet. Its length is 172.5 meters, width-23.16 meters, and height-11.58 meters.
"These Cold War giants are still the largest submarines ever built. Each submarine was..> wider than the average American home, and almost three times higher, " writes the author of the article.
According to him, the submarine contained 20 R-39 ballistic missiles, as well as a number of "unprecedented advantages" for the team such as a solarium, swimming pool and sauna.
The journalist presented in the article a comparison of the Russian submarine with the American submarine of the "Ohio" type. He stressed that, although the length of the cruisers differs slightly, the Russian submarine is much higher and wider.
"There may never be such a large class of submarines as Typhoons, but never say never," the author concluded.
On February 13, the American edition of The Diplomat called the active development of innovative technologies in the field of nuclear submarines of the Russian Navy a threat to NATO.
