All submarines were handed over to customers within the terms stipulated in the contracts, the Central Design Bureau of marine Equipment "Rubin" reported"
MOSCOW, December 31. /TASS/. The Russian Navy and foreign customers received 71 diesel-electric submarines of projects 877 and 636 (code "Varshavyanka") for 40 years of production of these submarines. This was reported to TASS by the press service of the central Design Bureau of Marine Equipment "Rubin" (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation).
"Over 40 years, 71 submarines were built under projects 877 and 636, and all of them were handed over to customers within the terms stipulated in the contracts. In total, the export versions of projects 877 and 636 were delivered to the navies of eight countries," the press service said.
December 31 marks the 40th anniversary of the transfer of the first Varshavyanka, the lead submarine of Project 877, to the Navy. As noted in "Rubin", " it began one of the most successful series in the world of non - atomic underwater shipbuilding of the late 20th-early 21st centuries." A series of ships of the project 877EKM for the Indian Navy received the Club-S missile system.
The submarines of Project 877 and its upgraded version-Project 636-embodied modern technical solutions. "The creation of these two projects was headed by the chief, then general designer of submarines of projects 641, 685 (Komsomolets), 877, 636 and 677 (Lada) Yuri Kormilitsin. The task set by the state customer-to create the third generation of non-nuclear submarines that will surpass the enemy in a dueling situation: low-noise, with a powerful sonar system and effective weapons, has been completed, " the press service of the enterprise stressed.
The boats of the project 877/636 are the lowest-noise Russian submarines, which is explained by the lack of noisy power units, a streamlined shape and a special hydroacoustic coating of the hull. In the West, this class of submarines was called "Black Hole"for its stealth. Submarines of this series can counteract underwater and surface ships, they are designed to protect naval bases, the coast and sea communications.
