An aviation integrated electric power system based on a single high-temperature superconducting (HTS) platform will appear in Russia. It is being developed as part of a joint project Of the Foundation for advanced research and CJSC "Superox". The system consists of a battery, a htsp cable, a htsp current limiting device, and a htsp electric motor.
Scientists of SibNIA im. Chaplygin installed an electric motor on superconductors on an experimental aircraft and performed its test launches with an air propeller. The work is carried out in preparation for flight tests. This was reported in the press service of the Central Institute of aviation engine building (CIAM) named after P. I. Baranov.
The electric motor is part of the hybrid powertrain demonstrator that CIAM is developing. An innovative electric motor based on high-temperature superconductors with a capacity of 500 kW (679 HP) was created by Superox. Previously, it passed a set of tests on special ground stands. Now the system is waiting for flight tests
For them, a flying laboratory is being created on the basis of the Yak-40 aircraft. Flight tests are scheduled for 2021. Before this, specialists need to conduct comprehensive checks of the operation of the electric motor on a specially designed motor frame, as well as determine its impact on the on-Board equipment of the flying laboratory.

Scientists are implementing one of the most important projects in modern aviation, said Mikhail Gordin, CEO of CIAM. The use of a hybrid power plant based on the htsp is designed to solve a number of technological issues that air transport is already facing.
Andrey Vavilov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Superox, added that Russian scientists are the first in the world to start testing an electric aircraft engine on the htsp.
Sergey Samoylenkov, CEO of Superox, noted that all the leading aircraft companies in the world are working on a highly efficient engine for aviation. Russia was the first to create such an engine using htsp technology, and also the first to show its high efficiency.
Anton Varyukhin, head of the Department "Hybrid (electric) power plants, systems and aircraft" of CIAM, believes that the complex will allow the introduction of electrical technologies in aviation and in the future accelerate the creation of aircraft with hybrid power plants.
High-temperature superconductivity is a phenomenon in which the electrical resistance of materials tends to zero under relatively high temperatures. It is assumed that due to the use of superconducting materials in the design of the electric motor, it will be possible to achieve a lower battery charge consumption.
In November, the launch of the pre-accelerator for the NICA Collider took place in Dubna. NICA (Nuclotron based Ion Collider Acility) is a new accelerator complex that is being created on the basis of the joint Institute for nuclear research to study the properties of dense baryonic matter.
