MOSCOW, Dec 15-RIA Novosti. The second over-the-horizon radar station "Container" will take up experimental combat duty in the Amur Region in 2024 to control the airspace in the eastern strategic direction, a source in the military-industrial complex told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

"The main purpose of the second "Container" is to strengthen radar monitoring of the eastern strategic aerospace direction, including in connection with the increased activity of US aviation, as well as to timely counter potential air threats, such as cruise and hypersonic missiles," the agency's interlocutor said. He added that the eastern strategic direction includes the Chukchi, Kamchatka and Sakhalin-Pacific air directions.

According to the source, "in accordance with the plans to build a system of over-the-horizon stations, the second "Container" will take up experimental combat duty in the Amur Region in 2024."

The interlocutor also noted that construction work is currently underway on the technical site of the future radar station with completion dates in 2023. "Tests of the new station will be held in 2023-2024," he said.

As previously reported by RIA Novosti in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, one of the new over-the-horizon stations in the near future is planned to be put in the east of Russia. The ministry also noted that the number of reconnaissance aircraft near the Russian borders in 2020 increased by 40% compared to 2019.

Since December 1, 2019, the first Container radar station has been on combat duty in Mordovia, which tracks flights of any aircraft at a distance of 1.5 thousand kilometers from the borders of Russia over the territory of Europe and the Middle East. The operation of the radar is based on the principle of reflection of the radio signal from the Earth's ionosphere.

As reported by RIA Novosti in JSC "RTI", the first" Container "over the past year has confirmed the ability to detect thousands of kilometers from the border of Russia, NATO fighters created with the use of stealth technologies. The radar was developed by the NPC NIIDAR enterprise, which is part of RTI JSC.
