MOSCOW, 14 Dec-RIA Novosti. New over-the-horizon radar stations (radars) that detect air targets thousands of kilometers from Russia's borders are planned to be installed in the South and East of the country, the defense Ministry told RIA Novosti.
The Ministry added that the possibility of over-the-horizon detection of air targets in the Arctic is also being studied.
Since December 1, 2019, the first Container over-the-horizon radar station has been on combat duty in Mordovia. The station is capable of detecting aircraft at a distance of 1.5 thousand kilometers from the borders of the Russian Federation over the territory of Eastern Europe and part of Western and Northern Europe, over several countries in the Middle East. The operation of the radar is based on the principle of reflection of the radio signal from the Earth's ionosphere. The "container" can detect any aircraft, cruise missiles, and even hypersonic vehicles.
As previously reported to RIA Novosti in JSC "RTI", "container" in Mordovia over the past year has confirmed the ability to detect thousands of kilometers from the border of the Russian Federation, NATO fighters created using technologies to reduce radar visibility ("stealth"). The station was developed by the NPC NIIDAR, a part of RTI JSC.
