The United States announced the creation of the Atlantic fleet to confront Russia
Washington decided to return the pre-2006 Atlantic fleet, which was replaced by the command of the US Navy forces. It is planned that the new American Navy will oppose the Russian Navy.
The United States will return the command of the forces of the American fleet to its former name-the Atlantic fleet, and also reorient it to solve problems of countering the Russian Navy in the region, us Secretary of the Navy Kenneth Braithwaite said during his speech at a hearing in one of the subcommittees of the us Senate Committee on armed forces.
"To cope with the unique challenges that arise in the Atlantic theater of operations, we will rename the command of the fleet forces to the us Atlantic fleet, and we will reorient our naval forces in this important region to their original task - to control the sea routes of approach to the territory of the United States and our allies," the head of the Ministry stressed.
The Atlantic fleet was originally formed in 1906, but in 2006 it was transformed into the United States fleet forces Command.
In early October, Business Insider reported that the us Navy's focus on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) has weakened during the middle East wars. But at present, as noted by journalists, the focus of the us Navy's efforts is shifting back because of the Russian threat. The publication wrote that this is emphasized by the "Black Widow 2020" exercises in the North Atlantic, which were held from 12 to 18 September this year.
Vice Admiral Daryl L. Codle, commander of the us Navy's submarine forces, said on September 16 that the degradation of the Russian Navy in the 1990s "allowed many people to think that the continental United States is a safe haven from Russian troops."
"But it is now well known that our homeland is no longer a safe haven, so we must be prepared to conduct high - tech military operations in local waters," Codl stressed.
As noted during a briefing at which Codl spoke with other representatives of the us Navy, modern anti-submarine defense requires clear coordination between the armed forces and branches of the Navy in a variety of areas, from spacecraft to submarines.
"We must maintain our positional advantage over the enemy, especially in the Atlantic. We have very experienced officers in the underwater community who are focusing on this at the moment. The rest are still returning to the issues of effective PLO management, and in the future this fight will be carried out in all areas," stressed the commander of the 2nd fleet of the US Navy, Vice Admiral Andrew Lewis.
In early July, the Wall Street Journal, citing NATO representatives and military analysts, reported that at least ten Russian submarines participated in military exercises in the North Atlantic ocean at the end of 2019.
Submarine moved from bases that are located in the Russian Arctic, and went out into the Atlantic. These maneuvers were "the largest since the end of the cold war" and allowed us to show "the strength and ambitions of the Russian Navy to protect its territories," the material said. In addition, according to the newspaper, Moscow wanted to show its power in the ocean.
According to the head of the NATO joint naval command, Vice Admiral Keith Blount, Russia is increasingly sending its submarines to areas where they "can threaten NATO ships."
The WSJ also quoted the commander of the Northern fleet, Vice Admiral Alexander Moiseev, who in early spring said that the Russian Navy is expanding the geography of combat duty.
"Last year, our multi-purpose submarines completed a number of tasks with deep-sea dives in various areas of the neutral waters of the Norwegian sea. Submariners of the Northern fleet successfully operated in the Atlantic and the Arctic ocean, "the Vice Admiral told Zvezda TV channel.
