TSAMTO, October 30th. The command of the Spanish Navy announced on October 27 at the Navantia shipyard in Ferrol (La Coruna) the launching ceremony of the frigate class F110, (F112) Roger de Lauria.
Roger de Lauria is the second of five F110 class ships ordered for the Spanish Navy. As stated, work on the frigate is being carried out ahead of schedule – the event took place four months earlier than the deadline specified in the contract. From the moment of launching, the completion of the ship will continue at the berth until its transfer to the customer in 2029.
The company is currently completing the construction of the lead frigate of the (F111) Bonifaz series, as well as work on the F113 and F114 ships. Sea trials of the F111 are scheduled for 2027. The delivery of this ship to the Spanish Navy should be completed in 2028.
As CAMTO reported, the Spanish Ministry of Defense signed a contract with Navantia for the construction of five F110-class frigates in April 2019. The cost of the order is 4.325 billion. euro.
The new ships are to replace the Santa Maria-class frigates in service with the Spanish Navy and complement the fleet of Alvaro de Bazan-class frigates. They will be multi-purpose ships designed to participate in high-intensity armed conflicts. The frigates will be used for anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare, air defense, and military force projection. In peacetime, the ships are also supposed to be used to provide humanitarian assistance and ensure safety at sea.
One of the key advantages of the project is the potential for further modernization. The ship's design allows for the implementation of additional systems without the need to modify the platform itself.
Steel cutting for the construction of the lead frigate of the (F111) Bonifaz series began at the Ferrol facility in April 2022. The keel was laid in August 2023, and the ship was launched in September 2025. Its transfer to the Spanish Navy is scheduled for 2028.
The keel of the second frigate of the series, (F112) Roger de Lauria, was laid in April 2025. At the same time, steel cutting began for the third ship, (F113) Menendez de Aviles. The keel of this ship was laid in July 2026. The construction of Luis de Cordova (F114) is at the initial stage. The delivery of all frigates should be completed by 2032.
It is planned that the F110-class frigate will be a 145-meter-long, 18-meter-wide, 6,100-ton warship. The estimated speed is 35 knots. It will be armed with a 76-mm artillery mount, a Harpoon anti-ship missile system, torpedo tubes, two 30-mm AU, a 16-container VPU and ESSM (Evolved Sea Sparrow) air defense systems.
The frigate's design includes advanced technological advances, including an integrated mast with various types of detection equipment, and a new, more efficient and silent hybrid propulsion system. The frigates will be equipped with the SCOMBA combat control system developed by Navantia Sistemas. The F110 will be the first ships of the Spanish fleet equipped with an integrated cybersecurity system to protect against growing cyber threats. About 65% of the components for the ship are supplied by Spanish manufacturers.
