According to the Kalashnikov Group of companies, the Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopter has been adapted to combat drones, having been equipped with a new weapon – a modified guided missile "Whirlwind".

The Whirlwind (and its improved version, the Whirlwind-1), originally designed to destroy armored vehicles, proved its effectiveness during the Ukrainian counteroffensive in 2023, effectively dealing with enemy armored vehicles. But due to the fact that they rarely appeared on the open battlefield, and drones (including fiber-optic models) filled the sky, the rocket was redesigned.

As Kalashnikov explained to TASS, the new version of the UR (which has not yet received a special designation) is equipped with a non-contact target sensor, which allows it to effectively hit air targets without directly hitting them. At the same time, guidance to the UAV is still carried out along a laser path: the on-board system or operator accompanies the target, illuminating it with a laser until it explodes.

The upgraded Whirlwind costs the defense budget significantly less than any specialized anti-aircraft missile. At the same time, it shows high lethality against large aircraft-type UAVs. Using rockets from helicopters ensures mobility. It is much easier for the Ka-52 crew to search, chase and aim at enemy drones than for ground-based air defense crews.
As indicated, the upgraded munition has already been adapted and the Ka-52 is actively used in combat conditions. Western observers have assessed the new means of destruction:
According to an assessment in the Western press, Russia is looking for more than one universal solution to the problem of UAVs, but is creating a wide range of both ground and air interceptors, as evidenced, for example, by the development of a new model of the UBS Yak-130M, capable of effectively combating drones.
