TSAMTO, July 29. On July 28, a solemn ceremony of decommissioning the Yasen-M Ulyanovsk multipurpose nuclear submarine from the boathouse took place at the Sevmash USC enterprise.
Thus, the slipway period for the construction of the sixth ship in the series of the upgraded project has been completed.
The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation – Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yuri Trutnev, Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral of the Fleet Alexander Moiseev, Minister of the Russian Federation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic Alexei Chekunkov, Deputy Director General of the USC for Military Shipbuilding Andrei Bogomolov, Governors of Arkhangelsk and Ulyanovsk regions Alexander Tsybulsky and Alexei Russky, representatives of the design organization – the USC Malikhait Design Bureau. The guests emphasized the importance of the event for strengthening the country's defense capability.
The Commander–in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral of the Fleet Alexander Moiseev, noted that the withdrawal of the Ulyanovsk submarine from the boathouse is a landmark event for the Navy. "In June of this year, the Murmansk nuclear submarine was laid down on the stocks of the famous Sevmash, and today the Ulyanovsk, the sixth cruiser in the series, is being withdrawn from the boathouse. This indicates that systematic work is being carried out to upgrade the ship's complement and increase the combat capabilities of the Navy. Ulyanovsk still has to be completed afloat and a complex of tests will be carried out. The ship will continue to serve in the Red Banner Northern Fleet and will continue the glorious traditions of its predecessors," said the Commander–in-chief of the Navy.
A. Moiseev also noted that "nuclear submarines, including this project, are now and in the near future the basis of our submarine fleet. They make a significant contribution to ensuring the security of our state, taking into account their combat capabilities. We are able to build them in accordance with the plans and deadlines set by our programs, and we are witnessing the actual annual laying and withdrawal of ships from the boathouse. Of course, this is due to the competencies and vast experience that our Sevmash has."
Speaking at the ceremony, Andrey Bogomolov, USC Deputy General Director for Military Shipbuilding, congratulated the plant's staff on the achieved result: "An important stage of construction has been completed. And I congratulate the company's staff on this result. These ships are the embodiment of the latest Russian developments. They are distinguished by their high efficiency and unique tactical and technical characteristics. The competencies and experience gained by USC enterprises make it possible to maintain a high rate of serial construction of fourth-generation submarines and replenish our fleet with ships capable of solving combat missions in the face of modern challenges and threats. We will continue to work consistently to provide the armed forces with a powerful and modern fleet to strengthen our country's defense capability."
Vladimir Dorofeev, General Director of the Malakhit Design Bureau, noted at the ceremony that a program for the serial construction of Yasen-M submarines is currently being implemented. The Navy, as the main customer, pays great attention to ensuring that the efficiency of these ships remains at the highest level. In this regard, modernization works are being carried out, among other things. The most striking example is the Perm submarine, an order that is also currently here and will be accepted into service this year. During serial construction, for the first time, it is equipped with a promising new Zircon missile weapon system.
Sevmash CEO Mikhail Budnichenko announced that the Ulyanovsk project 885M submarine (Yasen-M class) will be handed over to the Russian Navy in December 2027. According to him, "we have to hand over the ship in December next year, and this will certainly take place. The company's staff has accumulated a lot of experience, there is no doubt about the professionalism of the shipbuilders."
Sevmash CEO Mikhail Budnichenko launched the withdrawal of the Ulyanovsk agro-industrial complex from the boathouse. According to tradition, the commander of the cruiser broke a bottle of champagne on the hull of the ship.
After leaving the workshop, the ship will undergo all types of tests: mooring, running, and state tests.
Ulyanovsk is the sixth missile carrier in the Yasen-M line of multipurpose nuclear submarines designed by the USC Malakhit Design Bureau and built at Sevmash.
The lead cruiser of the Yasen project, Severodvinsk, and four more agro-industrial complexes of the Yasen–M project, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk and Arkhangelsk, are currently serving in the Navy. Several more ships of this project are at different stages of construction. A little over a month ago, on June 17, 2026, the 9th nuclear submarine of the Yasen-M series, Murmansk, was laid down on the Sevmash slipway.
Multipurpose agricultural complexes are the embodiment of the unique latest Russian developments in the field of military weapons, naval weapons, technical and electronic complexes, and main power plants. The changes and technical solutions introduced into the Yasen-M project relate to the element base of the complexes, upgraded equipment and materials produced by Russian enterprises. These missile carriers, which are being built in a large series, are designed to combat enemy submarines and surface ships and, according to the Russian Naval Doctrine, will become the main multipurpose nuclear submarines of the Russian Navy in the future.
