The Strategic Missile Forces successfully launched the latest Sarmat missile
Russian President Vladimir Putin has assessed the power of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile system for a stationary silo-based strategic missile system, calling it the most powerful in the world. During a videoconference meeting with military personnel on Tuesday, May 12, the head of state emphasized the strength of the country's other military equipment. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
Sarmat missile system
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation showed a test of the Sarmat missile system. Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces (Strategic Missile Forces) Sergey Karakaev stressed that the test results confirmed the correctness of the design and technological solutions laid down, as well as the feasibility of the specified characteristics of the missile system. According to him, Sarmat is being created to replace the Soviet Voyevoda complex.
Putin congratulated the military on the successful launch and wished them success in the future.
"First of all, it is the most powerful missile system in the world, not inferior in power to the Voyevoda missile system in service with us," the head of state stressed.
Karakayev stressed that the deployment of launchers with the Sarmat missile system would significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the ground-based group of strategic nuclear forces to ensure the destruction of targets and solve strategic deterrence tasks. The Russian President, in turn, said that at the end of this year, the Sarmat will be put on combat duty.
Improving the armaments of the Russian Army
Putin recalled that work on improving deterrence forces has been resumed in Russia and has not stopped since the early 2000s.
"We were not up to it then, we must say it bluntly. Russia was going through a very difficult period in its history, but after the United States withdrew from the Anti—Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002, we were forced, I want to emphasize this, forced to think about ensuring our strategic security in a new reality and the need to maintain a strategic balance of power and parity," the head of state stressed.
According to him, after that, work began in Russia on the creation of promising complexes that have no analogues and ensure the guaranteed overcoming of existing and promising missile defense systems.
The Russian President recalled that in 2004, work began on the Avangard intercontinental range missile system. He has been on combat duty since 2019. The Dagger medium-range hypersonic air-launched missile has appeared in the country. She, in turn, has been on combat duty since 2017 and is already being used during a special military operation. At the same time, Putin clarified that work on its improvement continues.
In addition, the head of state noted that at the moment, work is in the final stages on two complexes with small nuclear propulsion systems — a unique unmanned underwater vehicle Poseidon and a unique global-range cruise missile Burevestnik.
Sarmat missile system: characteristics
According to Putin, the total capacity of Sarmat is more than four times higher than that of any Western analogues. He called the rocket's ability to move not only along a ballistic trajectory, but also along a suborbital trajectory, the most important characteristic of the complex.
In particular, the President of the Russian Federation drew attention to the fact that this makes it possible to provide a range of over 35 thousand km with simultaneously doubled accuracy characteristics and the ability to overcome all existing and promising missile defense systems.
