India remains one of the largest users of MiG-29 fighter jets, operating more than 55 aircraft, including 8 two-seater. Against the background of the modernization of the fleet, the Ministry of Defense asked potential suppliers to provide information on the conditions for the integration of ASRAAM short-range air defense systems on the MiG–29 UPG, which is the most advanced modification of the "classic" MiG-29, designed specifically for New Delhi.
However, as indicated in the IDRW publication, this fighter continues to use the Soviet URVV R-73, which is limited to about 10-15 km.:
It is noted that ASRAAM, developed by the European manufacturer MBDA, is already used in the Indian Air Force on platforms such as LCA Tejas and Jaguar.:

ASRAAM, capable of reaching speeds of more than Mach 3, is a 4th generation rocket with an advanced infrared seeker, which not only sees the engine flare, but forms a detailed thermal image of the object. This allows the airborne forces to distinguish an enemy aircraft from false thermal targets and select the most vulnerable part of the fuselage, for example, the cockpit or the center of mass, for impact.
Indian observers welcome the planned transition of the MiG-29 UPG to new combat equipment:
